Dealing with Noisy Neighbours at Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa

I’ve had noisy neighbours in hotel rooms before, but nothing quite like what I experienced at the Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa in Malaysian Borneo. From the moment the sun set to the moment it rose again they wouldn’t shut up. Cackles and screams and hoots and howls and screeches — a non-stop racket all hours of the morning. No amount of pounding on the walls would stop them. No amount of obscenities hurled in their general direction would deter them. And no amount of complaining to management would do any good. You see these neighbours were the four-legged kind, the winged kind, and the creepy crawly things-that-go-boom-in-the-night kind. It’s a noise unlike any I’ve ever experienced before, and you know what, it was absolutely wonderful.

The Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa on the outskirts of the town of Miri is tucked away in the jungle. A very active jungle. And while you don’t notice the sounds (other than the rain) during the day, at night the resort becomes a concert of critters — each vying to become The Voice of the jungle.

Located smack dab in the middle of Gunung Mulu National Park, the Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa is hugged by lush vegetation at every turn.

Raised boardwalks throughout the grounds minimize the resort’s footprint and ensure guests don’t encroach too much upon the land. Since the rooms are built on 15-foot stilts, it’s almost akin to being in a series of connecting tree houses.

But to be clear, these are no tree houses — this is 5-star luxury to be sure.

And even with all those critters at your doorstep, not once during my 3-day stay did I see one of them enter my room. As much as I love frogs and all, it’s a little different if they end up scurrying around your room.

They would have felt at home though if they managed to get it — the bathroom featured a walk-in rain shower as well as a soaker jacuzzi tub. It’s exactly what you’ll need to wash away the sweat and dirt from a long day hiking in Gunung Mulu National Park.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate, and since most tours offer an included lunch, you’re pretty much covered when it comes to grub. There’s also a small convenience store onsite if you get the late night munchies. It also sells ear plugs, and trust me, after the novelty of the first night’s symphony wears off, you’re probably going to need them.

Have you ever stayed at a jungle resort like the Mulu Marriott Resort and Spa? How were the noise levels there?
